LaPorte County Jail Roster

The LaPorte County Jail Roster is a public list of individuals currently held in the county jail of Indiana. LaPorteCourt.us allows you to search for publicly available information about current and recently released inmates. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official website of the La Porte County Sheriff's Office, by phone, or in person at the jail reception. The search allows you to find out if a specific person is in custody, view the charges filed, and the booking date. The roster is maintained by the La Porte County Sheriff's Office; it is posted on the county website and updated regularly.

Search Current Inmates in LaPorte Jail

There are several ways to check if a person is currently held in the La Porte County Jail.

Online Search

  1. Visit LaPorteCourt.us — enter the person's full legal name or booking number to find publicly available inmate records.
  2. Go to the La Porte County Sheriff's Office page. If an online roster is available on the site, it usually appears as a scrollable list or search field. If there is no separate search field, use the browser function Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) to find the last name on the page.
  3. To check court cases related to detention, use the Indiana MyCase portal.

By Phone

Call the Sheriff's Office at one of the numbers:

  • La Porte: 219-326-7700
  • Michigan City: 219-879-3530

The operator can confirm if a specific person is in custody if you provide the full legal name and surname.

In-Person Visit

You can contact the jail reception or the Sheriff's Office directly.

What You Need for the Search

  • The person's full legal name and surname (as stated in documents)
  • Booking number, if known

Records of juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public register — this restriction is in accordance with Indiana law.

Find LaPorte Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created every time a person is officially admitted to jail. During the booking procedure, the following data is recorded:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of detention and admission
  • List of charges filed
  • Name of the arresting agency
  • Basic identification information (name, date of birth, photo)

These records can be obtained in several ways. The fastest is the online roster on the Sheriff's Office website or through LaPorteCourt.us. If you need an official copy of the document, contact the Clerk of the Circuit Court — this office is the custodian of court records and can issue certified copies.

For statewide criminal history checks, there is a separate tool — the limited criminal history search by the Indiana State Police. It covers felonies and Class A misdemeanors throughout the state but does not replace the local jail roster. If the person has already been transferred to an Indiana Department of Corrections facility, they can be found through the IDOC inmate database.

Search the LaPorte Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

  1. Enter the last name in the appropriate field. If necessary, add the first name to narrow the results.
  2. Check the spelling — even one incorrect letter can result in zero results. If the last name is complex or has multiple spelling variations (e.g., hyphenated), try a shortened version.
  3. Some systems support partial search: just enter the first few letters of the last name.

Search by Booking Number

If you know the booking number, enter it directly. This method is the most accurate and returns a single record.

If the Search Yields No Results

  • Check the spelling of the name — try alternative versions or just the last name.
  • The person may have already been released, and the record has disappeared from the current roster.
  • There may be a delay between the actual detention and the appearance of the record in the online system.
  • Call the jail at 219-326-7700 and inquire directly — the staff has access to an internal database that updates faster than the public one.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in LaPorte

The La Porte County roster is updated periodically, but not necessarily in real-time. In practice, this means several important limitations.

There is usually a delay between when a person is brought to jail and when their name appears in the online roster — from a few hours to a day. The booking procedure (booking, fingerprinting, photographing) must be completed before the data enters the system.

After release, the record typically disappears from the public list. The roster only displays those who are in custody at the time of viewing. It is not an archive of all past detentions.

What to Consider

  • Delays in data entry — especially on weekends and holidays when staff workload increases.
  • Technical interruptions — the site may be temporarily unavailable for updates.
  • Confidential records — some categories of cases are excluded from public access according to Indiana Rule 5 on Access to Court Records.
  • Transfers — if an inmate is transferred to another facility (e.g., state prison), the record will disappear from the county roster.

To obtain historical data on past bookings, contact the Sheriff's Office directly or submit a public records request. Court information on La Porte County cases can also be checked through the MyCase portal — it covers civil and criminal cases of local courts.
